Roller Derby is up-and-coming in Greater Lansing. The perfect chance to get in on the fun is coming up June 22nd!

For those who don't know (and I'm guessing that is not many of you given the excellent marketing done by the various Lansing entities), the Greater Lansing area has a very vibrant and lively roller derby scene. This gritty, rugged, kill or be killed, every woman for herself battle is frequently on display and has a quickly growing fan base. Who doesn't like to see some tough and sassy chicks mix it up and throw a few elbows, I know I do. If you're a fan of Roller Derby or especially if you've heard of it, but haven't had a chance to check it out, a big event is coming to the Greater Lansing area that you've just got to see. The 2013 Great Lakes Cup Tournament is headed to Aim High Sports in Dimondale at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday June 22nd, featuring teams from Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. They call their competitions bouts, like a boxing match, and yes, these ladies are very comfortable to get a little ugly. Heck, with this sport, that's the name of the game. This event was brought to the area by host teams the Capital City Wild Childs and the Mitten Mavens. Speaking of the Mitten Mavens they have a killer logo that I have always loved. It reminds me of old skateboard art from the 1980s which I loved at the time and still enjoy. A skull with pigtails? Absolutely up my alley. This is high-octane action and youll be sorry if you miss it so get over to Aim High, June 22nd - doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the first bout is at 10 a.m.

I highly suggest you and your crew roll on over to see a few bouts at this big tournament and root for the local team, or maybe just the team you like their competitors names best, they are all funny and creative. Enjoy the action but I do warn you - while you're there having fun and yelling "OOHH! AHH! WOAH!!" - Be sure to stay out of the way. These chicks will bust right through you. Additional information about this event, and the Greater Lansing Roller Derby scene at the Mitten Mavens Website!
